On Monday, Rockstar Games surprised fans by releasing the first trailer for Grand Theft Auto 6, the highly anticipated next installment in the popular open-world crime franchise. This game marks the first brand-new release in the series in over ten years, following the massive success of Grand Theft Auto 5, which has sold over 190 million copies since its launch in 2013.
The trailer introduces players to the game’s dual protagonists, Jason and Lucia, as they pursue their own interpretation of the American dream in Vice City, the game’s version of Miami, Florida, and other locations. While Vice City is a familiar setting for fans, it is presented in a completely different way in GTA 6, with a modern-day context replacing the 1980s stylized version seen in previous games.
The trailer showcases the game’s contemporary feel, incorporating elements from popular social media platforms TikTok and Instagram Live. However, it remains unclear how these elements will be integrated into gameplay. The trailer also highlights the chaotic street-level action, featuring footage that resembles newscasts, security camera footage, and police body cam recordings. The city streets and beaches are bustling with non-playable characters (NPCs), and the game includes various forms of wildlife, such as flamingos, alligators, and dogs. Players can expect to explore a range of locations, including downtown Vice City, the Everglades, and Key West.
Along with the gameplay footage, the trailer reveals that Grand Theft Auto 6 is set for release in 2025. The game will be available on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, with no confirmation yet for a PC version.
Originally, Rockstar had planned to unveil the first trailer on Tuesday, but due to a leak, they decided to release it earlier than anticipated.
Notably, Grand Theft Auto 6 will be the first game in the series that Sam Houser, co-founder of Rockstar Games, releases without his brother and fellow co-founder, Dan Houser. Dan played a significant role in the development of Rockstar games, often writing the scripts and overseeing production. He had writing credits on every GTA game since 1999’s GTA: London 1969, but he left the company in March 2020.
